Abuse causes harm to seniors and affects their quality of life. It then has consequences of a physical, psychological or financial nature.
Physical consequences
The mistreatment received by seniors who are victims of abuse can have consequences for their physical health. In particular, the victims may:
- lose weight;
- develop a disease;
- suffer temporary injuries;
- retain permanent aftereffects.
Psychological consequences
Seniors who are victims of abuse develop feelings that often hinder their participation in society, which is so important for them. They may feel:
- distress;
- shame;
- fear;
- isolation;
- insecurity;
- anxiety;
- confusion.
These feelings cause them to withdraw within themselves and feel depressed. In this state, abuse victims may adopt self-destructive or suicidal behaviours.
Financial consequences

- are incapable of meeting their regular needs;
- recognize they will be unable to rectify their financial position because of their advanced age;
- realize that their living conditions are deteriorating.
